Mange is a disease caused by mites. Your Vet can perform a physical exam of your pet by taking skin scrapings to determine if he has the mange. You will notice itching, hair loss, dandruff or oozing or crusty skin on your pet. You can keep your dog from getting the Mange by cleaning his bedding often, vacuum furniture and carpets and keep your dog on monthly flea and tick medicine which will also kill mites. There are some great products on the market that will help clean your dog's bedding, or get a new dog bed that is washable.

Disgusting! Hookworms are thick to short worms that are whitish to reddish brown with a hooked front end. These hookworms live in the gastrointestinal tract. These hookworms are passed through fecal/oral contact and at times - from mother to offspring. Complications can be anemia, weight loss, deterioration of the skin and coat condition. At times adult dogs can show no symptoms at all. There are simple ways to keep your dogs from acquiring hookworms; clean up poop in yard, de-worm your puppies and keep dog's on leashes when in parks etc. so that they do not get near other dog's fecal matter.

Roundworms are large worms that usually are tightly coiled when passed through and look like spaghetti. Yuk - right? They also live in the gastrointestinal tract. These Roundworms can be passed through like hookworms, but come from rodent, rabbit or animal ingestion. Same symptoms as the hookworm and same symptoms, so please treat accordingly.

The Tapeworm has got to be the yuckiest of all, with their ribbon like appearance. Most all the signs, treatment and how they are transmitted are the same as the other worms, but you can see these worms in their fecal matter.

Yes, Halloween is a fun time for the whole family but can be a bit scary for Fido. If you have a uptight pooch or a shy doggy, this can be very stressful for dogs and pets of all kind.

The doorbell "ding donging" non stop, strangers approaching and loud trick or treaters..can honestly get the best of anyone! Can you imagine what your pet is feeling? All these odd people in big hats and spooky voices yelling at the front door “TRICK OR TREAT”!

There are steps you can take to help your pooch with the wonderfully spooky holiday!

First thing you can do is keep calm! Be relaxed and he or she will pick up on that
Do not force your dog to approach spooky yard decorations or laughing skeletons.
Be careful forcing to your dog to lay down or “be nice”, aggression often comes from dogs that are forced into a “spooky” situation.
Utilize his or her crate if she is crate trained. Put in another room with a favorite toy and turn on the TV for sound.
If your dog is allowed to be in with the excitement, what the front door, as they can bolt out quickly and with all the HOOPLA going on, they could run into the street.
Keep candy away from your dog! Sometimes while checking the candy or wiping off the face makeup from our little human ghouls, we forget about our pet being in the living room susceptible to yummy Milk Duds! If you suspect that Fido has enjoyed a Milky Way, call the Animal Control Hotline at 1-900-680-0000. Remember: Chocolate can be deadly to dogs!
If your dog is chained, Please Please unchain and secure him or her inside or in a crate. Chained dogs are always vulnerable to cruel or mischievous actions, so please don't take a chance.
Lastly, if you are going to dress up your little Weiner in the newest Hot Dog Costume, please don’t make him or her wear it for hours!

Summertime Pests and your dog

Fleas, ticks and mosquito's can be harmful to your dog and when using certain brands of flea and tick drugs, sometimes can be fatal to your dog. Sometimes a dog’s immune system and thyroid function can be harmed by using harsh chemicals and at time neurological issues can occur. Try some “common sense” actions to prevent your dog from getting sick this summer outside.

Since pet owners are trying to be a bit more cautious these days as to what they use in their yards and what they put on their pets, a more natural approach to the summertime pests can be simple:

1/ Check your dog with a flea comb to see whether or not he really has fleas
2/ Vacuum your home every week and empty the container outside in a trashbag and seal up.
3/ Wash a dog’s bedding and blankets every week in hot water
4/ Remove any long brush or dead vegetation from the yard
5/ You can add one teaspoon of brewer’s yeast (not baking yeast) to your dog’s food.
6/ Spray your dog down with a flowery scented shampoo diluted with water and let air dry
7/ If fleas are out of control at your home, a safe dog shampoo with pyrethrin is a great fix
8/ You can add chopped fresh garlic to your dog’s food everyday
9/ You can rub citronella or peppermint in their fur to also repel flies and other insects
10/ Empty all standing water in fountains, containers, buckets, bird baths and potted plants to help control mosquito's
11/ Mow your yard weekly
12/ Keep your dog indoors at dawn and dusk which is peak time for mosquito activity

It’s relatively a quick fix if you start to take control immediately before the flea/tick or mosquito’s get out of hand. Dog owners should see their veterinarians if your dog shows signs of fever, depression, lack of coordination, muscle weakness or any type of seizures.

4th of July Safety Tips for your dog!

While we all look forward to the 4th of July with the parade, then the picnic and then on to watch the fireworks that evening, dogs can sometimes struggle a bit with your idea of fun and excitement.

Let's just say it this way~not all dogs are the same with the same behavior and the same temperament. Some dogs are very easy going and laid back while others are anxious and nervous. Not sure if the 4th of July is the time to see which category your dog falls in to. There are many alternatives you can choose to still include your dog in the activities, such as dressing him up in patriotic clothes or giving him precious little red, white and blue dog treats.

There are some 4th of July dog safety tips that all dog owners need to follow; whether or not you drag your dog to the fireworks shows or not:

1/ Think the fireworks display through when contemplating on taking your dog.
2/ If you leave your dog at home, make sure he is indoors in the evening time and in a quiet area. Many dogs become scared and anxious when the fireworks go off and terrify these dogs. Some dog's just do not like loud noises.
3/ Put on the radio or television when you leave your dog in the home to avoid hearing the BOOM of the fireworks.
4/ Think about getting your dog a special 4th of July dog treat or patriotic dog toy to keep him happy and busy while you are gone.

If you must leave your dog outdoors, please make sure the following steps are taken:

1/ Are you dog's id tags and collar tags up to date and on his collar, just in case he gets out of your yard?
2/ Secure your fence in the yard and make sure there isn't any area that your dog can escape.
3/ Make sure the dog bowl is filled with clean water, it is July and it is hot.

Everyone loves the 4th of July with the sparklers and the smell of the fireworks in the night, just remember our furry little friends might not love it so much.

So you’ve gotten a new dog? Congratulations!

You have now joined the millions of pet owners in the world that adore and enjoy their dogs everyday!

There is so much to look forward to as you begin a part of your life with your new friend. Frisbees, chew toys, and (hopefully not) shoes marked with teeth marks, will soon litter your floor or backyard. If it gets too much, there are wonderful pet toy boxes to get now, not just for kids anymore!

Unfortunately, many owners regret the addition of their new friend because they were not adequately prepared. Remember, it’s just as important to make your home “pet friendly”, as you start to build a close relationship with your pet and start from the beginning by training and teaching him good behavior.

Just a few quick suggestions can ensure that your home is safe for your pet, and enjoyable for you and your family.

Avoid vertical blinds, tie up drapery cords, and move most dangling items higher. If a dog gets caught in anything, it’s all coming down and could hurt your dog as well!
Wrap up all electrical cords in a durable plastic casing.
Check your yard and around your house for things that can be potentially toxic to your dog.
Install pet gates at locations around the house that you don’t want your dog venturing into. Giving your pet boundries is a great way to start your training.
Get pet toys, or chews to keep your dog busy and make sure that he has adequate dog bedding and or dog crates if you are going to crate train your pet.

A general rule of thumb is to consider what precautions you would take if you brought an infant home and go the extra mile to ensure that your pet is safe and happy and look forward to a lifetime of love from your new best friend!

Remember, training your dog is your responsibility as a new pet owner. Be patient with your little one as he is learning how to please you and how to adapt to being in a new home. Just think of Marley in the famous Marley and Me movie. It wasn't so easy to love him starting out, then.. it was absolute love.
